Bear attacks in Sparta raise concerns – NBC New York

A police department in New Jersey is warning residents to be vigilant after a dog was killed and another injured in two bear encounters in less than a week, officials said.

According to police in Sparta Township in Sussex County, both incidents, the first on May 9 and the second on May 13, occurred near West Mountain Road. In the first case, a resident’s dogs were attacked on Graphic Boulevard. This became fatal. Four days later, another encounter between dog and bear occurred on Mountain Spring Drive. This dog was injured but survived the attack.

The family in the first case says their pup Rocco initially survived, requiring more than 100 stitches and incurring $6,000 in medical costs. He died from his injuries days later.

The Sparta Township Police Department said and NJ Fish and Wildlife officials are investigating the attacks and taking appropriate action to ensure public safety.

People living in the area can take extra precautions, such as securing trash and food sources that could attract wildlife before moving them outside.

Anyone who observes an aggressive bear or encounters aggressive wildlife is urged to contact the Sparta Township Police Department at (973) 729-6121.
