SEQUIM – A Sequim Police Department exhibit highlighting the 24-year history of the K9 program is on view at the Karen Kuznek-Reese Gallery in the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St.

The exhibition is open throughout May to mark National Police Week. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Sequim K9 program began in 2000 and is active today with K9 Officer Mamba. The program is funded by donations earmarked for the Sequim Police Department K9 Program. All donations go toward funding health care, food, training and supplies for the K9 unit.

Anyone wishing to donate to the program can contact police at 360-683-7227.

President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation in 1962 designating May 15 as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and the week in which that day falls as National Police Week.

Tens of thousands of police officers from around the world will converge on Washington, DC during Police Week to take part in a series of planned events honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The memorial service began in 1982 with a gathering of about 120 survivors and law enforcement supporters at Senate Park.

As of April 23 of this year, there have been 348 line-of-duty deaths in the United States.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office will host a bell ringing ceremony to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty on May 17 at 1:30 p.m. at Liberty Park, next to the Clallam County Courthouse in Port Angeles.
