Bozeman investigation after gun found near high school

BOZEMAN – Bozeman Police have confirmed that a weapon was found after a Gallatin High School (GHS) student reportedly brought the weapon to school and threatened another student with it on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

The gun was found off campus. A press release from the Bozeman Police Department said School Resource Officers (SROs) and school administrators took immediate action after learning of a possible weapon at GHS on Wednesday afternoon.

After a search for the weapon at the school and interviews with those involved, SROs and school administrators found the described weapon outside the school grounds on Wednesday evening.

The press release states: “Based on the investigation, it appears that one of the students actually brought a handgun to school and threatened another student with it. This situation has been contained and there is no threat at the GHS.”

The news release said the affected students have been suspended from school for the remainder of the year. Possible criminal charges are pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

“The safety of our students is our top priority. We are grateful for the quick actions of our SROs and school administrators to resolve this situation,” Detective Captain Dana McNeil said in the release. “Their diligent work ensured there was no further escalation, and we are fortunate to have such highly trained staff working every day to keep our students safe.”

Bozeman police said they could not release the names of the juveniles involved in the incident.
