In New York, thousands of people are killed or seriously injured each year. According to the New York Department of Health, “Pedestrian injuries are among the top 10 causes of injury-related hospitalizations and deaths in nearly all age groups in New York State. Each year, approximately 300 pedestrians are killed and 15,000 injured by motor vehicles on the state’s roadways, and more than 3,000 pedestrians are hospitalized annually.” Drivers should take a number of steps to avoid collisions with pedestrians.

  • Drivers should check their blind spots before turning.
  • In areas with heavy pedestrian traffic, drivers should reduce their speed.
  • Drivers should always keep an eye on the road ahead.

All drivers must take precautions to avoid collisions with pedestrians. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid a collision, it may be the basis for a negligence claim. Cities can also take a number of measures to prevent collisions with pedestrians.

  • Cities should ensure good lighting at intersections.
  • Cities should take traffic calming measures on busy roads.
  • Cities should strictly enforce traffic violations that are likely to result in pedestrian accidents.

Pedestrian accidents are largely preventable. They usually occur when drivers drive too fast for the conditions or do not pay attention to the road ahead.
