UConn suspends fraternity after hazing arrest

STORRS, Conn. (WTNH) — The University of Connecticut suspended a fraternity on Thursday after a member of the group was accused of assaulting a new member during the formation process.

“The university takes a zero-tolerance approach to behavior that puts others at risk and is committed to creating a safe, healthy and respectful environment across all UConn organizations and on the UConn campus,” it said in a written statement University statement.

David Vallejo, a 23-year-old from Willington, is accused of repeatedly assaulting the new member, including throwing him against a wall and choking him. Police initially said Vallejo was the fraternity’s president. However, the university announced Thursday that Vallejo’s term ended in December.

A UConn spokesman said Lamba Theta Phi cannot operate while the university investigates the hazing allegations. The fraternity has been based at the university since 1991.

According to the university, UConn officials are investigating a second complaint against Vallejo. He was arrested again Tuesday on a warrant for similar charges.

UConn said federal law means it cannot disclose whether Vallejo will be subject to disciplinary review.
