Police are investigating a “vile, heartless attack” on a horse that was found dead and mutilated in a pasture.

Nottinghamshire Police said Alfie, a 16-year-old traditional tri-coloured cob, was found at a property off Owday Lane in Carlton-in-Lindrick, Worksop, at around 10.30am (BST) on Thursday.

Alfie was last seen safe and sound around 7 p.m. on Wednesday when his owner rode and bathed him before releasing him into a pasture, officials said.

Ch Insp Clive Collings said it was “the epitome of a senseless and violent attack” and warned horse owners to be vigilant.

Police said officers reviewed video surveillance footage, examined forensic options and conducted door-to-door interviews.

Mr Collings, head of rural and wildlife crime at Nottinghamshire Police, said: “While it is hard to believe, all the evidence shows that this was a vile, heartless attack on a defenceless animal.”

“I would urge anyone with information about the incident to contact us as soon as possible.

“Alfie’s owner was devastated by his cruel death and wants justice for him.”

He said they had asked people in the area if they had any helpful surveillance camera or doorbell footage or if they could remember noticing any suspicious activity between 7pm Wednesday and 10.30am Thursday.

“We also warn horse owners in the area to be particularly vigilant given the horrific nature of this crime,” he added.
