16-year-old arrested in connection with social media threat to Glastonbury High School – NBC Connecticut

A teenager has been arrested in connection with a social media threat allegedly directed at Glastonbury High School last month.

On June 11, police became aware of a concerning profile page on Discord. A student from Glastonbury reported the profile page to Youth and Family Services.

Investigators said the profile page on Discord contained a bomb threat against Glastonbury High School, references to the KKK and Hitler, and included death threats against African Americans.

“There is no place for hate, racism or violence in our school community. This disturbing incident reminds everyone of the importance of our work to create safe, inclusive and supportive learning environments where all students feel respected and valued,” Alan Bookman, Glastonbury School’s school councillor, said last week of the incident.

During the course of the investigation, police said it was determined that the underage owner of the Discord account was the victim and not the suspect. Officials said another 16-year-old illegally gained access to the victim’s Discord account and modified the profile page to include the threats.

According to police, the 16-year-old suspect also sent direct messages from the victim’s Discord account containing death threats to other people, naming certain African-American students at Glastonbury High School.

Officials believe the threats were directed at the owner of the Discord account. Police requested and received an arrest warrant on Monday, accusing the 16-year-old suspect of intimidation based on prejudice or bigotry, threats, computer crime, identity fraud, disturbing the peace, harassment and falsely reporting an incident.

The arrest warrant was executed on Monday and the 16-year-old suspect was handed over to the Hartford Juvenile Court. As of last Friday, this student is no longer enrolled in Glastonbury Public Schools, is not allowed to attend school functions, and is not allowed on school grounds.

The Greater Hartford NAACP calls the threats unacceptable and says it will contact city officials.

The issue is expected to be addressed during a city council meeting on Tuesday.
