Cause of death of Richard Simmons is under investigation

The official cause of death of Richard Simmons is currently under investigation, Los Angeles police said.

The legendary fitness trainer died on Saturday – just one day after his 76th birthday.

The case was adjourned by the Los Angeles coroner’s office and a further investigation was requested, reports People.

The review, which includes additional tests, can take up to three months before an official decision is made.

As TMZ first reported, police and firefighters were dispatched to the health guru’s LA home after receiving a call from Simmons’ housekeeper on Saturday morning.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The police told the news agency that “there was no third-party negligence”.

Simmons reportedly refused medical attention after falling the night before he was found dead.

Law enforcement sources told TMZ that Simmons fell in his bathroom on Friday night – which happened to be his 76th birthday – before his housekeeper helped him up and immediately tried to get him medical help.

However, sources told the outlet that he reportedly declined because he wanted to stay home on his birthday.

He then told his housekeeper that Simmons, who had reportedly been dizzy before the fall, said he would see a doctor the next day.

However, at around 10:00 a.m. the aerobics instructor was found unconscious on the floor next to his bed.

Insiders told the outlet that Simmons showed no signs of injury following the accident.

Simmons, who announced in March that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer, said in a rare interview published just a day before his death that he felt “good” and was “grateful” to be “alive.”

“I feel good! I’m grateful to be here and to be alive for another day,” Simmons told People last week. “I’m going to spend my birthday doing what I do every day: helping people.”

Simmons, who hadn’t been seen in public for a decade, told the outlet that he missed his fans as much as they missed him.

“I know people miss me. And you know what? I miss them too. But I can reach them by phone … and email,” he said. “And sometimes I leave the house. But I’m in disguise.”
