Bennington police ask for help identifying masked suspect in armed carjacking in Walmart parking lot

Bennington Police are asking the public for help in identifying a masked suspect who used a firearm in a carjacking and attempted robbery late Friday night. According to their department, officers were called to a report of a carjacking that occurred in the Walmart parking lot around 11:20 p.m. Friday night. During their investigation, authorities found that the suspect entered the victim’s car through the passenger window after displaying a firearm. The victim was ordered to exit his car and when he did, the suspect drove away in it. According to Bennington Police, the victim was treated for minor injuries by members of the Bennington Rescue Squad. Vermont State Police also responded to the incident. Through further investigation, officers learned that the suspect attempted to rob two Walmart employees while they were working outside the store. The suspect reportedly approached the employees while pointing a firearm at them. The employees were then handcuffed with duct tape while the suspect demanded money. Police said the suspect ran away as a van drove by. Both employees were unharmed. The suspect ran and stole a white 2023 Toyota Highlander while fleeing. The car was found on Elm Street Saturday morning. Bennington police are asking residents of Elm Street and surrounding streets to check their security cameras for suspicious activity after 11:30 p.m. on July 5 through the early morning hours of July 6. Authorities describe the suspect as being approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, white shoes, gloves and a mask. Witnesses described the suspect as a young white male. Bennington officers are following up on leads to identify the suspect. The department is asking anyone with information about the incident to call 802-442-1030.

According to their department, officers were called to a car theft that occurred in the Walmart parking lot around 11:20 p.m. Friday night.

During their investigation, authorities discovered that the suspect had entered the victim’s car through the passenger window, displaying a firearm.

The victim was asked to get out of his car. When he did so, the suspect drove away.

According to Bennington Police, the victim was treated for minor injuries by members of the Bennington Rescue Squad.

The Vermont State Police also responded to the incident.

Through further investigation, officers discovered that the suspect attempted to rob two Walmart employees while they were working outside the store.

According to police, the suspect fled when a delivery truck drove past. Both employees were unharmed.
