Accidents claim four lives in three days

After four people were killed in accidents on the N3 between Pietermaritzburg and Howick in the last three days, emergency services have urged motorists to drive with caution.

Two people were killed in a truck accident in Lion’s River on Sunday morning. The truck driver and his passenger suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

In another incident on Saturday on Ekhamanzi Road, two people were seriously injured and one person was killed when a pickup truck lost its trailer, which collided with another pickup truck.

Another driver was killed on Monday afternoon on the N3 southbound just past Hilton. When emergency services arrived, they found that the vehicle had left the road and collided with a tree. One person sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Early Monday morning, a seven-month pregnant mother was flown to hospital by helicopter after her condition became life-threatening following an accident involving her car in Mpophomeni.

According to Midlands EMS rescue workers on scene, two vehicles collided, with one of them rolling over several times.

A seven-month pregnant mother was in critical condition and required urgent advanced life support. A decision was made on scene to request a rescue helicopter and fly her to a Level 1 trauma hospital for further treatment.

Another person sustained minor injuries and was also treated at the scene before being taken to hospital for further treatment,” the statement said.

Roland Robertson of Midlands EMS urged motorists to drive carefully and obey road traffic rules.

“We urge the public to be careful when driving, to pay attention and also to slow down when approaching accident scenes to avoid secondary accidents,” Robertson said.
