Police are warning cyclists and pedestrians to be careful in light of the recent fatal accident involving a child

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – Cycling is a popular activity in the Panhandle, but it’s also important for cyclists and drivers to be aware of their surroundings.

“There is a lot of pedestrian cycling along the entire stretch of Panama City Beach, Panama and Walton County,” said Jason King of the Florida Highway Patrol.

The most important thing state troopers say is to be aware of your surroundings. For those who ride bikes, it is better to be safe than sorry, even if they have the right of way. Whether you’re on four wheels or two, it’s important to stay safe on the roads.

“Take the time to pay attention and slow down, give the person the opportunity to cross the street, eliminate distractions, be more defensively aware as a driver and be on your guard,” King said.

It is important to remain vigilant to avoid tragedy.

On Tuesday, the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a crash in Miramar Beach involving a truck and a father and child riding a bicycle.

“Apparently a tractor-trailer or commercial vehicle was attempting to turn left from a side road to travel east on Highway 98 and for some reason was unable to observe the bicyclist crossing the roadway,” King said.

The child reportedly did not survive, but this is just one of many fatal accidents in the area in the last year.

“Well, we had 55 accidents (last year). We classify pedestrians and cyclists under one roof. It looks like 55 pedestrians and cyclists were involved in accidents last year. 5 fatalities in Walton County alone, not surrounding counties.”

State troopers say obeying the speed limit is critical, but when there are crowds, it’s important to drive below the speed limit.

“We encourage our cyclists and pedestrians to always wear bright clothing, reflective clothing, helmets and safety gear as necessary, whatever you can,” King said. “Even if you have the right at a crosswalk, you may legally have the right of way, but it’s not worth the risk of racing against a 6,000- to 20,000-ton vehicle.”
