Russia claims air defenses shot down 36 Ukrainian drones in night attacks

Russia’s air defense systems intercepted 36 drones launched from Ukraine overnight that were targeting several southwestern regions of Russia, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

The ministry reported on Telegram that 15 drones were destroyed over the Kursk region on the border with Ukraine, nine over the Lipetsk region, several hundred kilometers south of Moscow. In addition, four drones were shot down over the Voronezh and Bryansk regions and two drones each over the Oryol and Belgorod regions.

The governors of the Lipetsk and Bryansk regions reported on their Telegram channels that there were no casualties or significant damage in the attacks. Russian officials usually withhold detailed information about the impact of Ukrainian attacks.

Kyiv said the attacks on Russian military, transport and energy infrastructure were a retaliatory measure in response to Moscow’s aggression against Ukraine since the start of the invasion in 2022.
