INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ — Officials say they have arrested a suspect following a “targeted act” in Independence Township Thursday morning that caused part of the community to shelter at home.

Police have released few details about the incident, saying only that a “critical incident” occurred along Alphano Road at around 9:30 a.m. and asked residents to report any suspicious activity.

The suspect had left the immediate area by 10:00 a.m. and officials said he no longer posed a direct threat to the public.

“This was a targeted act and we do not believe the community is in danger,” police said.

Local radio station WRNJ-FM reported that a state police helicopter was assisting in the search for the suspect. The WRNJ report cited police radio traffic and spoke of an unconfirmed shooting at a residence near the Allamuchy Township border.

The unidentified suspect was later arrested in Pennsylvania, police said shortly before noon. Alphano Road has since reopened.

Residents in the area were briefly urged to stay safe and police asked motorists to avoid the road.
