What are Silver Alerts?

Indiana issues Silver Alerts for missing endangered adults, missing endangered children, missing high-risk persons and persons with a medically certified mental impairment. Unlike Amber Alerts, the missing person does not have to be under 18 to trigger the alert.

One criterion for Silver Alerts is that a doctor must review the missing person’s medical condition and confirm that he or she believes that the missing person’s health and condition would put them at risk.

The state has issued 19 Silver Alerts so far this year, and 18 of those people have been located.

Last year, 79 missing people were reported in the Silver Alert and all were located, with three found dead. Since 2009, 874 alarms have been issued across the country and 830 people have been located.

The criteria for Silver Alerts can vary by state. Twenty-eight states have a Silver Alert program. In some states, Silver Alerts are intended exclusively for missing people over the age of 65 who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or an intellectual disability.
