CLEVELAND (WJW) – The suspect shot during an attempted carjacking of an Amazon delivery driver’s vehicle was a 17-year-old boy, according to authorities.

The Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office has identified the boy as 17-year-old Alquin Wells. His death was ruled a homicide caused by gunshot wounds to the back that caused multiple internal injuries.

According to police, the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, near the intersection of West 48th Street and Franklin Boulevard.

Investigators said the suspect approached the delivery driver and attempted to steal the car, reportedly firing shots. The suspect drove away but soon crashed.

Wells was found on the ground on West 48th Street, south of the intersection, and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

A West 48th Street resident shared photos of her car, which she said was hit by gunfire.

An Amazon representative wrote in a statement Saturday: “We are saddened to learn of this tragic incident and are working closely with law enforcement on the investigation.”
