Teenager arrested after stabbing on Ocean City Boardwalk – NBC10 Philadelphia

A teenager has been arrested in connection with a stabbing that occurred on the Ocean City boardwalk during a chaotic Memorial Day weekend on the New Jersey shore.

On Saturday, May 25, at approximately 9:15 p.m., police received a 911 call reporting an assault on the Ocean City Boardwalk. Investigators said there was a large fight between a group of teenagers, during which a 15-year-old boy was stabbed in the stomach. The teen was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries.

The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and Ocean City Police interviewed witnesses, reviewed surveillance footage and were able to identify a juvenile suspect in the stabbing. On Tuesday, June 4, investigators – with help from Hamilton Township Police and Pleasantville Police – were able to locate the suspect and arrest the juvenile in Pleasantville, New Jersey, officials said.

Ocean City Police have released bodycam video showing officers attempting to control a large gathering of teenagers on the boardwalk over Memorial Day weekend.

The teen is charged as a juvenile offender with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and possession of a weapon. The teen is being held in the juvenile hall pending trial. Officials have not identified the teen because the suspect is a minor.

The incident was one of at least four separate fights that broke out on the Ocean City Boardwalk over Memorial Day weekend, resulting in more than 20 arrests. NBC10 has obtained video footage of some of the fights, including footage of teens fleeing the brawl as well as teens running toward the brawl as families are caught in the middle of the chaos.

Violent behavior was also reported in Wildwood and Seaside Heights over the holiday weekend.

On Friday, May 31, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin said there were not enough Wildwood officers assigned to the boardwalk. Officials said unrest on May 26 led to the boardwalk’s nightly closure and asked neighboring police departments for assistance.

Wildwood Police Chief Joseph Murphy and the police department issued a statement June 1 calling Platkin’s claim “inaccurate and ill-informed.” They said the police department had assigned more than 30 uniformed officers to the boardwalk, more than it had in the past two years. But despite the increased number of officers, rioting involving hundreds or even thousands of young people broke out over Memorial Day weekend, necessitating an emergency declaration.
