Forecast First Alert Tuesday: Heavy storms and heavy rain possible

Here is your Monday evening forecast for June 3, 2024 from the Minnesota Weather Service and meteorologist Matt Serwe.

The Minnesota Weather Service is issuing a first weather warning for Tuesday. Severe storms are possible in the afternoon, and heavy rain could lead to flooding.

Humidity will remain high Monday night and overnight. This feels like thunderstorm weather, but there’s nothing over us to trigger storms tonight. That will change Tuesday as a cold front moves across the state from west to east. Tomorrow will start mostly sunny with gusty southerly winds. Highs will reach the low to mid 80s in the Twin Cities. Storms will form along the front after 2 p.m. in central Minnesota, reaching the Twin Cities after 3 p.m. Afternoon commute on Tuesday could be much slower than normal because of these storms. Strong winds, some hail and very heavy rain are possible in the metropolitan area Tuesday afternoon into early evening. Another 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible, and there is a risk of flash flooding Tuesday due to waterlogged ground.

Rivers could continue to rise through midweek, although very little rain is expected after Tuesday. If you live in a river community, be sure to check for river levels, which will rise in the coming days. Wednesday and Thursday will be stormy. West to northwest winds are expected both days, with gusts up to 40 mph at times. These strong winds will bring in much drier air, pushing temperatures back into the 70s and 25s for the second half of the week. Scattered showers or thunderstorms are possible here and there, but no major storms are expected for late this week and early next week.
