Escaped inmate accused of assaulting a correctional officer was arrested Friday, police said

WEST BATON ROUGE PARISH, Louisiana (BRPROUD) – An inmate who escaped on Friday is now back in custody.

Christopher Spearman, 24, an inmate at the West Baton Rouge Parish Detention Center, attacked a correctional officer and fled the facility shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 31, according to the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.


Officers were able to quickly locate Spearman on US Highway 190. According to WBRSO, Spearman ran away from officers and then jumped into a pond in a residential area.

He refused to get out of the pond. According to WBRSO, officers “managed to stay in contact with Spearman and eventually took him into custody when he surrendered.”

The injured WBRSO deputy was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, according to WBRSO.

Spearman was initially arrested for illegal possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools and inducement of juvenile delinquency. He now faces additional charges that will be announced at a later date, according to WBRSO.

This is an ongoing investigation.
