A man attacked several people with a knife in Mannheim on Friday, injuring seven people, according to police.

The perpetrator was shot by police. He underwent surgery and is currently unfit for questioning, officials said, and the motive for the attack remains unclear.

According to various German media reports, the alleged perpetrator is a 25-year-old man from Afghanistan who is said to have immigrated to Germany in 2013 and has a valid residence permit.

Among those injured in the attack is reportedly a police officer who is still fighting for his life.

“His life is still in acute danger,” said a spokesman for the State Criminal Police Office on Saturday morning.

Among the stabbers was Michael Stürzenberger, a well-known German right-wing extremist political activist and critic of Islam.

Videos of the incident shared on social media show Stürzenberger being attacked by the man on Mannheim’s market square at around 11:45 a.m. local time. Stürzenberger had taken part in a rally organized by the citizens’ movement Pax Europa, which describes itself as “anti-Islamization.”

Stefanie Kizina, a colleague of Stürzenberger, told the local reporter of the German newspaper Bild that he would undergo “emergency surgery” after the stab wounds to his face and leg, but that his injuries were not life-threatening.

Rescue and emergency services, including a rescue helicopter, were dispatched to the scene. Information on the condition of other victims is not available.
