Suspect arrested for attack on elderly woman in Santa Monica

A suspect has been arrested for allegedly attacking an elderly woman in Santa Monica.

The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Jalan Rodger James, according to Santa Monica police.

The victim was only identified as a 73-year-old woman. The incident occurred as the woman was taking a morning walk near the 1600 block of Ocean Front Walk.

James then approached her, yelling incoherently. The woman tried to move out of his way as he passed, but he suddenly walked toward her and pushed her to the ground, police said.

He continued walking, leaving the woman with abrasions on her hands and a back injury, authorities said.

A second call to police revealed that the suspect was also observed attempting to strike passersby in the area.

Officers and a police drone unit arrived at the scene, where James was observed walking near 2nd Street and Colorado Avenue.

He was arrested on several charges, including:

  • Serious bodily harm
  • Severe elder abuse/adult abuse
  • Two cases of resistance against a senior employee

Authorities say James is believed to be homeless and faces additional charges in another assault case in Santa Monica that is currently being investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

“The safety and well-being of our most vulnerable residents is SMPD’s highest priority,” said Santa Monica Police Chief Ramon Batista. “Assaults against the elderly are taken very seriously and we will continue to pursue felony charges in these cases.”

Any possible victims or anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Detective Holloway at [email protected] or the Watch Commander at 310-458-8427.
