Boating accident in Summerside Harbour claims life of 57-year-old Prince Edward Island man

SUMMERSIDE, PEI — The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Prince Edward Island said a 57-year-old man was killed in a boating accident in Summerside Harbour.

According to police, two men were traveling in an oyster boat in the harbor on Saturday evening when the boat presumably hit a channel marker and a man was thrown out.

The man remaining on the boat attempted to rescue the man who had fallen overboard, was able to bring him to shore and call 911.

RCMP spokesman Scott Ferris said he was eventually pronounced dead at Holman Wharf around 9:45 p.m.

He says members of the island’s emergency services, Summerside police and the Canadian Coast Guard were also on site.

Ferris says an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death and the Mounties’ investigation is ongoing.
