Knife attack in Guixi city elementary school leaves two dead

Two people were killed and 10 others injured in a knife attack at a primary school in southern China’s Jiangxi province, police said.

It was not immediately clear whether children were among the victims.

The attack occurred around noon (0400 GMT) at the school in Guixi city.

According to police, the attack was carried out by a 45-year-old woman who used a fruit knife. She has now been checked, police added in a statement on social media.

It is unclear why the primary school, which educates children aged six to 12 in China, was targeted.

There has been a spate of knife attacks in China in recent months. Last May, a man killed two people and injured 21 others at a hospital in the southern province of Yunnan.

In August last year, two people were killed and seven others injured after a man with a history of mental illness attacked people with a knife in a residential neighborhood in Yunnan.

In July of that year, six people, including three children, were killed in a knife attack at a kindergarten in the southeastern province of Guangdong.
