The KBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one dead, one in custody and one on the run

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – A person was shot Friday evening after fleeing a stolen vehicle with two other suspects and shooting at a KCKPD officer.

According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the incident began on Friday, May 10, when a silver Hyundai Sonata was reported stolen.

The next day, on Saturday, May 11, Kansas City, Kansas police determined that the car may have been in the area of ​​South 7th Street Trafficway and I-35.

Shortly thereafter, at approximately 11:15 p.m., a citizen called 911 to report that a silver car had been stopped in the 1500 block of South 7th Street Trafficway and three people had run away. At the same time, a KCKPD officer pulled up behind the car and witnessed the same incident.

The officer pursued the three people on foot as they ran up the ramp to southbound I-35. Once at the top, one of the suspects “hid in the thick undergrowth,” pulled out a pistol and shot the officer from behind, the KBI reported. The officer was uninjured and returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times.

The injured suspect was given medical attention, but emergency medical services pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities are still working to identify him.

The second suspect, a 16-year-old male, was taken into custody by KCKPD officers without incident. The third suspect fled and was not found.

Two handguns were recovered at the scene.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident and will report its findings to the Wyandotte County District Attorney.
