Michigan State Police are investigating after a wrong-way driver caused a serious fatal crash on southbound Interstate 75 in Oakland County early this morning that left four people dead on Sunday.

According to state police, the accident occurred at about 2:50 a.m. on I-75 near 11 Mile Road in Royal Oak.

The Detroit Regional Communication Center (DRCC) received calls about a wrong-way driver in a black Volkswagen traveling north on I-75. Dispatchers then received calls indicating that the driver had collided with a Dodge Caravan near 11 Mile.

“Royal Oak Police officers arrived on scene and confirmed the accident. They began towing vehicles from the highway to secure the scene,” a police press release said. “Royal Oak Police reported that the Volkswagen was engulfed in flames and there were numerous casualties.”
