Rescue operations underway after flood in basement of UPSC coaching centre kills two students | Delhi News

Two students were killed when a nearby sewer caused flooding in the basement of a UPSC coaching centre in Delhi’s Old Rajendra Nagar. Delhi Fire Services (DFS) chief Atul Garg said they were searching for one more person.

Teams from Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are currently conducting rescue operations at the accident site.

Durgesh Pathak, Aam Aadmi Party MP for Rajendra Nagar, said, “Here, a drain burst at one place, which caused this problem. Pumps were set up to pump out the water. If it had happened due to lack of desilting, the water would have accumulated in other buildings as well, but the basement of a single building is flooded because the drain burst at only one place.”

Delhi’s Water Resources Minister Atishi also took stock of the situation and said that a magistrate has been appointed to investigate the incident. “There is news of an accident due to heavy rain in Delhi in the evening. There is news of water seepage in the basement of a training institute in Rajendra Nagar. Delhi Fire Service and NDRF are on the spot. Delhi Mayor and local MP are also there. I am being informed about the incident every minute. A magistrate has been appointed to investigate how this incident happened. Whoever is responsible for this incident will not be spared…” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Meanwhile, Delhi BJP leader Virendra Sachdeva termed it a “clear accident” and said it was “caused by uncleaned drains and the sewage was backflowing into the basement of the coaching centre at a very high speed. The criminal negligence of the Delhi government is responsible for this accident. Jal Board Minister Atishi and local MP Durgesh Pathak should take responsibility and resign.”
