Update on the Shelly fire incident of July 26, 2024

The Shelly Fire, which has been raging in Siskiyou County since July 3, 2024, has now destroyed 15,477 acres (61,000 hectares) of land. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Here is the latest update on the incident:

Containment percentage: 89%
Number of employees: 1,233

The primary focus has shifted to firefighting repairs as the fire perimeter has held up despite recent high winds. Firefighters are continuing their efforts toward full containment while resources are released for new incidents. Remaining firefighters are focused on timely repairs and cleanup of areas utilized during firefighting efforts.

An official forest closure has been in effect around the Shelly Fire since July 4. This closure area has been reduced in size, but hikers are still not allowed to enter and are asked to leave the area. For more information and a map of the closure area, visit the USDA Forest Service website.
