LA County prosecutor charges son with murder of Burbank kindergarten teacher – NBC Los Angeles

Kyle Lombardo, 25, accused of murdering his mother, was arraigned Thursday by Los Angeles County District Attorney Geoge Gascón.

Karyn Lombardo, a popular kindergarten teacher, was found dead in her Burbank home on May 7, with her son named as a suspect in the murder. The 57-year-old teacher lived with her husband and son.

A family member said at the trial that Kyle struggled with his mental health and that his mother loved him very much.

Kyle’s attorney Jimmy Chu echoed the family member and said the tragedy stemmed from an argument gone wrong.

“This tragedy is the result of an accident following an argument between a son and a mother whom my client loved very much,” Chu said. “My office and I are investigating all aspects, including potential mental health factors and intellectual developmental disabilities.”

Burbank police confirmed the woman died after an altercation with her son, but what led to the kindergarten teacher’s death is still unknown.

Kyle’s bail has been set at $2 million and his arraignment is scheduled for May 22 at the Pasadena Courthouse.

The Burbank Unified School District said Karyn taught in Burbank for more than three decades, serving in a variety of teaching roles, including as a bilingual teacher.

“Throughout her highly successful career, Ms. Lombardo touched the lives of thousands of students, parents and colleagues who will mourn this loss in the days ahead,” Burbank Unified Superintendent John Paramo said in an email. “Her dedication, warmth and passion for teaching have touched the lives of many students and colleagues. Their profound impact and loss to this community will be deeply felt throughout the city of Burbank.”
