Police launch manhunt for lecherous robbers who raped female students in Ogun

The Ogun State Police have announced that a manhunt has begun for the robbers who allegedly raped two 100th year students of the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ìjèbú-Ode on Monday after breaking into their rooms in a residential area.

The command’s spokesman, Omolola Odutola, announced the manhunt in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 am on Monday following the recent death of Fabiyi Ayinla, a final year student of the Faculty of History and Diplomacy. Ayinla was attacked on July 3, 2024, which led to his death.

After Ayinla’s death PUNCH Metro reported that the school administration had suspended examinations at the institution for several days.

As our correspondent learned during the incident on Monday, the suspected robbers gained access to the student’s apartment at around 12:30 a.m. by cutting through a mosquito net on the window.

After gaining entry, the two students were forced at gunpoint to hand over their mobile phones. They were then taken to a nearby unfinished building, where the suspects took turns raping them.

A source within the school, who wished to remain anonymous due to the seriousness of the case, said the students immediately reported the incident to the school’s security chief, who then informed the police.

The source said: “They tore the mosquito net covering the window. When they entered, they demanded that they hand over their mobile phones at gunpoint.”

“They asked them to open the doors because they had entered the room through the window. They said they would use the bank card they had taken from the students to withdraw money from a cash machine.

“But when the ladies opened their doors, they led them to an unfinished building across from a 10-block-long single-family home, where the suspects took turns raping them.”

The school’s public relations officer, Ayotunde Odubela, did not answer his phone or respond to our correspondent’s text message on Tuesday when PUNCH Metro wanted to know his reaction.

However, the acting President of the Student Union of the school, Mrs Bethel Olorunfunmi, informed our correspondent on Tuesday that the association was aware of the incident and efforts were currently underway to resolve the issue.

“Yes, we are aware of this. The necessary steps have been taken,” she simply explained in a telephone conversation with our correspondent.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the command, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Monday, said that the police officers of the Igbeba Division would leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to justice.

She said: “The incident was reported to the Igbeba Police Station at about 10:00am. Our officers immediately combed the area in search of the suspects.

“Efforts to arrest all those involved in the crime are in full swing. The survivors have been taken to the school clinic for treatment.”

PUNCH Metro reported that the institution has been under intense surveillance of late. Also, in October 2023, four female students of the institution were reportedly raped by persons suspected to be armed robbers in one of the university communities.
