YSCRP workers attacked a police officer? No, the claim is false!

The SP of Tirupati district told The Quint that the person who attacked the policeman was mentally unstable.

Fact check: The person who attacked the officer was from West Bengal and was mentally unstable.

A video with a transcript is being shared on social media platforms showing a man beating a man in police uniform.

The claim: The reports said that Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) workers attacked a policeman in Guduru, Andhra Pradesh. They also wrote that there was no protection for the police.

Is that true?: No, the claim is false.

  • The man who attacked the policeman was mentally unstable. He was from West Bengal, Tirupati police told us. He was later arrested.

  • According to media reports, the attacker was a certain Laltu Kalindi, who suffered “psychotic episodes” when he saw uniformed police officers.

Our findings: We conducted a relevant keyword search using terms such as “police officer beaten in Guduru” and found several news reports.

  • According to a report by TV9 Telugu On July 19, a mentally unstable man attacked the superintendent of police of Gudur rural police station with a stick. The policeman’s name was Swami Das.

  • The attacker, Laltu Kalindi, was from West Bengal and suffered psychotic episodes when he saw uniformed police officers, the report said.

  • The same incident was also reported by Deccan Chronicle. According to reports, the policeman sustained severe head injuries and was shifted from Gudur Area Hospital to Tirupati district for further treatment.

  • Similar, 10TV Tamil also reported this incident on July 19.

Police response: The Quintet contacted the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Tirupati District, L Subbarayudu, who confirmed that no political parties were involved in the incident.

  • The SP told us that a mentally ill man from West Bengal attacked the head constable of Gudur rural police station with a stick when he got down from his bike to fetch water from a local shop. He also mentioned that the attacker has been arrested.

Diploma: A video of a man attacking a policeman in Gudur, in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, is being circulated with false claims that the attack was carried out by members of the YSRCP.
