Teen arrested in recent bus crash in Milwaukee County

Milwaukee police arrested a 16-year-old boy after a three-vehicle crash involving a Milwaukee County Transit System bus Thursday afternoon. Around 2:15 p.m., police said the teen was speeding in a stolen car at 27th and Clybourn streets and collided with a car before crashing into the MCTS bus. Several Two Brothers Automotive employees and customers saw and heard the accident. “I heard a big bang so I ran out because I’m used to cars coming through the fence,” said Howard Benson, the owner of the auto repair shop. “And I’m looking to see where the accident was, so I looked and saw that the car hit the bus.” Surveillance video from Benson’s business shows the moments after the accident as the suspect sprints away from the scene; Milwaukee police officers ran after him. “After he got on the bus, he jumped out the window of the car and just ran away. I guess they finally got him,” said Walter McMurray, an employee at Two Brothers Automotive. This incident is at least the fourth in which an MCTS bus has been damaged or destroyed in the last month. On April 27, a bus was engulfed in flames near 6th and Congress streets. MCTS attributed the cause to a mechanical problem. Reckless driving destroyed two more buses and claimed lives. A passenger died when the driver crashed into an MCTS bus at 35th Street and Wisconsin Avenue on April 20. At least nine other people were injured. On April 19, one person died and seven others were injured in a bus crash at 35th Street and Capitol Drive. MCTS resident Denise Wandke said in a previous interview that the loss of this equipment is putting a strain on the county’s budget: “We only have a limited number of buses. This is because we are already reaching our reserve quota. I’m just trying to keep the fleet. “So that was a hard blow for us,” Wandke said. McMurray hopes drivers think about Tuesday’s accident. “This is a problem in Milwaukee, it’s mostly the young people, but they need to slow down,” McMurray said. Police said no one was injured in this crash, although witnesses told 12 News the driver of the car that was hit was bleeding at the scene. MPD said charges against the 16-year-old will be forwarded to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days. year-old driver.
