Registration for the Dead Carp 20K Run and the 5K Run/Walk | is still open WJMN

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) – Runners of all ages are getting ready to take in the lake views in Marquette this coming weekend.

The Queen City Running Company’s 3rd Annual Dead Carp 20K Run and 5K Run/Walk will take place this Saturday, May 11th along Lake Superior.

The course begins at 9 a.m. Saturday morning on the bike path in front of Drifa Brewing Company and runs along the lake over the Carp River and Dead River. A short time later a 5 km race begins. Dead River Coffee provides prizes and coffee to runners at the races.

“This event is truly unique,” said Paige Dubois, operations manager and event coordinator at Queen City Running Company. “It came from a local runner in town and he said, ‘Hey, we could come up with this race, it’s 20km and you cross the Dead River and the Carp River.’ So it’s a unique course. The 20K runners run about 2 miles south, then turn around and head back north to Presque Isle and back to Drifa for a 20K route, or 12.4 miles. Then there’s the 5K run/walk that starts just outside Drifa and then runs north towards McCarty’s Cove and back.”

There will be a post-race celebration at Drifa Brewing Company on Saturday. There will also be a Little Carp 1 Mile Race for children under 12 on Friday evening.

“It’s also a great start to summer racing,” DuBois said. “There are a lot of marathons coming up and it is a good entry-level race for those who have high goals and ambitions. It’s also a great rust killer and for some it’s their first 5K. It is a family friendly event. We also host a Little Carp 1 Mile on Friday evening. This includes our South Beach package pickup and is a free event courtesy of Range Bank. They are actually sponsoring this event for us. This way we can provide the children with some ribbons and treats and then the main event takes place on Saturday.”

You can register online by Saturday morning or stop by the Queen City Running Company in person by Friday evening. Proceeds from the race support Camp UPeninsulin, a summer camp for UP children with T1 diabetes.
