Wilton police warn of credit card skimmers after incident at Village Market

WILTON – Wilton police issued a warning to residents about a credit card skimming device found at the Village Market.

The device was installed while the cashier was intentionally distracted.

Authorities have yet to determine how long the skimming device was in operation.

Village Market is actively cooperating with police in the investigation.

Police are urging the public to monitor their bank accounts for unauthorized activity that could indicate the presence of skimming devices.

To identify potential skimmers, police offered several tips:

– Look for misalignment between the card reader and the bezel underneath.
– Skimmers may protrude at an unusual angle when placed above the actual reader.
– Compare card readers at different cash registers or gas stations for any discrepancies.
– Visually and physically inspect the card readers for loose parts that could indicate tampering.
– Skimmer devices are often attached with double-sided adhesive tape.

Skimmers have been reported at various locations with card readers, including gas stations and supermarkets.

Residents are advised to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Anyone with information or concerns is asked to contact Detective Eva Zimnoch at (203) 834-6260.
