Officials seize 32 dogs and iguanas from Mississippi home as part of animal cruelty investigation; owner charged

ARKABUTLA, Mississippi (WMC) – A Tate County man is facing charges of aggravated animal cruelty after an investigation found dozens of animals were housed in a home in Arkabulta, Mississippi over the weekend.

Officers with the Tate County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search of a home in the 2000 block of Prichard Road on Saturday as part of an ongoing animal cruelty investigation.

Sheriff’s office officials said 32 dogs and a large iguana were seized from the property and are being placed at the Senatobia-Tate County Animal Shelter and local foster homes.

In addition, the animals are examined and treated by local veterinarians for various health problems.

Tommy Dean Douglas has been charged in connection with this case. He is also accused of simple assault on a police officer and disturbing the peace.

He is being held in the Tate County Jail on $50,000 bail.

The Senatobia-Tate County Animal Shelter posted an emergency alert on Facebook on Monday saying the shelter is currently unable to accept dogs due to the influx of animals.
