2 dead, 19 injured in shooting at street festival in Detroit

A mass shooting left two people dead and 19 injured early Sunday morning at a street festival in Detroit’s notorious, gang-ridden “Red Zone.” The shooting occurred at about 2:25 a.m. during a street festival on the city’s east side near Wish Egan Field in the Mohican Regent neighborhood, according to police.

Michigan State Police confirmed on X that there were two fatalities and 19 others injured in the shooting: “The Michigan State Police are assisting Detroit Police in the investigation of a shooting as part of our partnership with the Homicide Task Force.”

A 22-year-old, unidentified man reportedly opened fire in the area known as the “Red Zone” by the local Seven Miles Bloods street gang (according to Click On Detroit). A 20-year-old woman was fatally shot in the head and a 21-year-old man was killed by a bullet to the back, the source said. All of Sunday’s victims were between the ages of 17 and 28. One of the victims – a 17-year-old girl – is in critical condition, and thirteen others are in serious condition. The man who opened fire was shot in his left leg and taken into custody. He is in stable condition and hospitalized.

According to NBC affiliate WDIV, the Michigan State Police is assisting Detroit police in the investigation through their joint Homicide Task Force and stated that no suspect is in custody following the incident.

City Council President Mary Sheffield said in a statement to X: “I was saddened and deeply sickened to learn of the mass shooting earlier today on Detroit’s east side in which 21 young people, average age 19, were shot and two of them succumbed to their injuries. This unspeakable tragedy is another reminder that gun violence is an epidemic in Detroit and across the country. We must chart a new course, and I urge everyone to pitch in to put an end to the senseless killings and destruction of families in our community…my heart and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones.”

Michigan State Police have asked anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
