Vigil for Detroit father of seven who was shot in Clinton Township

(WXYZ) — A father of seven who was gunned down on July 4 was honored at a candlelight vigil Saturday night.

The vigil for Jaret Mays took place at the corner of Lenox and Linville in east Detroit.

His family and friends wanted to honor him in the neighborhood he called home.

“It hurts, it hurts to no longer see someone at 35 who had his whole life ahead of him,” said Lorie Mays.

Lorie Mays, Jaret Mays’ aunt, was one of the many people who came to the vigil to pay their respects.

“He was a good person, a very good person, a very loved person, a good father and it is very heartbreaking that he is no longer with us,” Lorie Mays said.

Jaret Mays was shot and killed in his Clinton Township apartment complex on July 4.

“It was kind of unbelievable because Jaret wasn’t that kind of person. He was a guy with strong character who went to work and did everything he did with great passion,” said Rod Walker, Jaret May’s cousin.

Rod Walker says Jaret Mays was loved by so many people.

“He was really a role model for me, so I imagine he was a role model for a lot of other people,” Walker said.

Jaret Mays worked at Chrysler and, according to his aunt Lorie, accomplished so much in his 35 years of life.

“He owned his own company called Shoe Solutions, he worked at Chrysler, he was a nurse, he also worked in the trades, he had training for them, he worked at UPS, he worked as a nurse at Beaumont,” Lorie Mays said.

While May’s family mourns his loss, they also search for answers surrounding his murder.

“We want justice. We want people to speak out. Now is not the time to be silent. We want them to tell what happened so this person can be prosecuted. They have taken a father away from many children,” said Lorie Mays.
