Hurricane Beryl leaves Houston family in Jamaica after delays

HOUSTON, Texas — KHOU 11 spoke to several people this week who were in the path of Hurricane Beryl and waiting to return home. The hurricane closed airports and delayed flights, leaving people frustrated.

Anissa Veal and her family were supposed to return to Houston on Wednesday, but the storm left them stranded in Jamaica.

“We started our journey at the Azul Resort in Negril, Jamaica. We have been here since Friday, June 28,” said Anissa Veal.

Veal said when they found out Beryl was leaving for Jamaica, they left the resort early to be closer to the airport. It turned out to be a decision they made, and she’s glad they did.

“The resort we were staying at is about an hour and a half to two hours from the Montego Bay airport and we were advised by some of the staff that the roads would be impassable between the airport and the resorts,” Veal said.

She said when the hurricane passed, they weren’t the worst hit, but they were still left without power.

“The hotel we were at has reduced their food supply because, of course, you know, they’re probably not able to restock it,” Veal said.

Veal said they had no idea if another flight would be canceled.

“The weather is nice and clear right now. Hopefully it stays that way and we can get on a plane out of here,” Veal said.

She just hopes they can get home without further delay.

“We’re safe, and that’s a blessing in itself. We’re ready to go home,” Veal said.

Some of her family members won’t be able to return home until Sunday. Her flight is scheduled for Friday and she hopes that doesn’t change.
