Off-duty Suffolk County police officer rescues man after fishing accident

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY— An off-duty officer from the Suffolk County Police Department’s Second Precinct played a critical role in rescuing a man who suffered serious injuries in a fishing accident in the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday.

Officer William Parmenter, fishing about 80 miles southeast of Shinnecock Inlet, responded to a mayday call he heard over the marine radio around 2 p.m. on July 3. Parmenter, also a trained emergency medical technician, immediately offered his assistance and boarded the injured man’s boat with a trauma kit.

The 66-year-old victim was bleeding profusely from both legs due to puncture wounds from a fishing hook while fishing for yellowfin tuna. Parmenter applied tourniquets to both legs and coordinated with the United States Coast Guard and the Suffolk County Police Department Aviation Division for an immediate evacuation.

A Coast Guard helicopter picked up the man 20 miles south of Hampton Bays and took him to Long Island MacArthur Airport. From there, the Suffolk County Police helicopter flew him to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was treated and later released.

    NEW YORK, NY—The New York Police Department is asking the public for help in identifying several individuals connected to a recent robbery in Central Park. The incident occurred near 62 West Drive in the Central Park Precinct.

    At around 9:05 p.m. on Sunday, a group of unidentified suspects approached two young men, aged 20 and 21, and forcibly took their belongings, including a backpack, headphones and a wallet. The suspects then fled the scene on foot. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the altercation.
