NSB woman tells terrifying details after rescue dog attacked her

A New Smyrna Beach couple is still recovering from being attacked by the dog they adopted just six weeks earlier. Darlyn Warner and Chad Bunfill had only good memories with their new rescue dog, but on Mother’s Day, something changed. Warner tells us she was lying in bed when Harley, her dog, went berserk. “I just looked down, and it was him,” Warner said. “And he was moving his head back and forth, and then he must have lost his grip, and then he did it again. He took a piece of my calf.” Warner eventually crawled into the dog’s cage and did everything he could to escape. That’s when Harley attacked Bunfill. A neighbor who was in the house at the time called 911, and while Harley was clinging to Bunfill, police officers arrived. “Our eyes met, and I knew they were there to save us,” Warner said. Then Harley charged at both officers. They shot the dog. The officers who responded were Justin De La Rosa and Tyler Blackwell. “I never imagined a dog bite would result in such a dramatic scene,” De La Rosa said. “There was a lot of blood and the emotions were just tough.” Officers applied tourniquets to both Warner and Bunfill. The two were taken to the hospital with deep wounds. They remained in the hospital for over a week. “I’ve never been scared of so many things in my life, and that was scary,” Bunfill said. Even when Warner saw the two officers weeks later, she was emotional. On Thursday, she gave them a big hug and repeatedly thanked them for what they did. “I didn’t think we were going to get out alive … if these guys weren’t here,” Warner said. The couple is still recovering. Warner suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder from the incident, and they see the doctor weekly to have all of their wounds checked.
