BUFFALO, New York — Ten years ago this week:

The Buffalo Sabers selected Sam Reinhart with the second overall pick in the NHL Draft. Reinhart, a center, currently plays with the Florida Panthers.

That same week, one of the greatest players in team history, Dominik Hasek, was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Thousands gathered at Canalside for outdoor watch parties for the FIFA World Cup, the Frank Lloyd Wright gas station opened at the Peirce Arrow Museum and U.S. Army Maj. Patrick Miller , who was injured while saving others during the Fort Hood shootings a few months earlier, returned home. Western New York and heroes are welcome.

The United States Supreme Court ruled in the “Hobby Lobby” case that certain private companies were not required to provide free birth control as part of their employees’ health care coverage, and the American Bar Association determined that it was ethical for lawyers who select jurors to learn about it by trolling their social media pages this week in 2014.


After turning over their convention center to the Seneca for use as a casino, Governor Pataki joined Niagara Falls officials to cut the ribbon on their new, smaller conference center.

Buffalo’s Gus Macker Tournament, with more than 1,000 teams, remains one of the largest three-on-three basketball tournaments in the country.

Katie Couric was named to the Television Hall of Fame and we started hearing that Ron Burgandy was “a big deal” at this week’s premiere of the 2004 movie Anchorman.


Movie fans flocked with children to see The Lion King when the animated feature premiered in cinemas. The animated feature became the highest-grossing film of the year.
