Suspect arrested for road rage in fatal Clearfield shooting, weeks after incident

CLEARFIELD, Utah — The suspect, who allegedly shot a man during a driving aggression incident in Clearfield was arrested for murder almost three weeks after the altercation.

Justin Kent Doman, 34, of West Point was taken into custody by Clearfield police without incident Thursday morning.

Doman was initially in custody but not arrested immediately after the shooting that killed 63-year-old James Saccato on June 3. Police said at the time that Doman cooperated with officers and was later released.

Clearfield police said Thursday that Doman’s arrest came after investigators collected evidence and met with prosecutors from the Davis County District Attorney’s Office.

On June 3, police received a 911 call from Doman regarding a hit-and-run crash near Industrial Parkway and State Route 193. Doman continued to follow a Chevrolet Silverado driven by Saccato until both vehicles stopped on a residential street near 300 North and 1200 West.

The police report states that Saccato got out of his truck and approached Doman, who pulled out a gun. Doman told police that Saccato tried to reach into his Ford Ranger, believing he was trying to disarm him. He then shot Saccato in the chest and attempted life-saving measures before being taken into custody.

During a police interview, Doman told investigators that Saccato cut him off as he was merging onto SR-193 and later gave him the middle finger and honked his horn. Doman said Saccato braked on him “multiple times,” causing Doman to rear-end Saccato at the crash scene.

As Saccato continued driving, Doman called 911 to report the incident and continued the pursuit at about 70 mph on SR-193. Doman said he blocked the road with his truck after Saccato made a U-turn on South Main, resulting in a second collision between the two vehicles.

Doman claimed that Saccato “made a motion as if he was going to brandish a firearm from his waistband and point it at (Doman).” After he accessed his own weapon, Doman said, he realized Saccato was not armed.

As Saccato reached into Doman’s car, Doman fired one shot before getting out to administer first aid.

“The Clearfield Police Department extends its sincere condolences to everyone affected by this completely unnecessary tragedy,” police wrote in a press release.

The shooting in Clearfield occurred the day after another fatal incident of road rage in Lehi in which a man was found unconscious in the middle of the road after being struck by another driver. The man later succumbed to his injuries and the suspect, John Jeffrey Williams, was arrested for aggravated assault.
