Man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping 15-year-old

A man, Ojo Ayegbusi, was on Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment by an Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division, for the rape of a 15-year-old girl.

Ayegbusi is said to have committed the crime on November 11, 2020 in Ikole Ekiti.

The indictment states: “The innocent victim of the rape was returning from school when she was approached by the defendant, who lured her into his room and had sexual intercourse with her.

“She could not tell anyone about her terrible experience, but her father found out about it when the girl was taken to the hospital after she collapsed at home with blood pouring from her genitals.”

The accused was then arrested and brought to court.

The Attorney General of Ekiti State, Julius Ajibare, said: “The offence of rape contravenes Section 31(2) of the Child Rights Act, Cap.C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.”

Ajibare, who represented Ekiti State, called five witnesses.

He also presented three pieces of evidence to support his case.

The accused, speaking through his lawyer EO Sunmonu, presented his defense statement and called a witness.

In his judgment, Judge John Adeyeye found that “the prosecution has proven beyond reasonable doubt the offence of rape against the accused”.

The court subsequently sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment.
