13-year-old killed, 18-year-old brother injured in shooting outside Cortland Med Center Apartments in southwest Houston, police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A 13-year-old boy is dead and his 18-year-old brother is recovering in the hospital after they were gunned down in the parking lot of their southwest Houston apartment complex Sunday night, police said.

Lt. JP Horelica said the two brothers were walking through the parking lot of the Cortland Med Center apartment complex in the 9100 block of Lakes at 610 Drive around 8:40 p.m.

A car reportedly stopped near the teens before someone jumped out and shot them. Horelica said the 13-year-old died at the scene and the 18-year-old was taken to the hospital where he is expected to survive.

HPD said there is currently no indication that the shooting is related to gang violence, although the investigation is still in its early stages. It is unclear if this was a random incident or if the victims were targeted.

According to investigators, the teenagers lived in the apartment complex. Their parents were on site but did not witness the incident.

Houston police said the suspects fled in a gray vehicle, possibly a Lexus. One of them was reportedly wearing a blue hoodie.

Anyone with information is asked to contact HPD’s Homicide Unit at 713-308-3600 or speak anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
