The Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, has suspended special promotions within the police force with immediate effect, arguing that doing so would jeopardise the jobs of officers.

The IGP, who was obviously annoyed at the way some officers were lobbying for special promotions, pointed out that from now on, anyone recommended by the higher echelons for special promotion would be subject to disciplinary action.

Egbetokun also said that the police command would arrange for the special promotion of an officer if necessary.

He also banned unjustified advertising posts and warned that anyone found guilty of this act would be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the armed forces.

This despite the fact that he awarded prizes to 27 high-ranking police officers who were only recently promoted from their first rank to a new one.

The new appointments include one Deputy Inspector General of Police, eleven Deputy Inspectors General of Police and 15 Police Commissioners.

Among those awarded is DIG Yayaha Abubakar, a lawyer from Adamawa State who was attached to AIG Zone 14 prior to his promotion.

The newly promoted AIGs are Mohammad Badeh, a Niger-born former police commissioner who was in charge of Safer Highway, and Ahmed Armani, a Katsina State native who holds a master’s degree in law enforcement and has worked for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), among others.

Also present is AIG Mohammed Hussain, born in Jigawa State, who was in charge of the Kano State Police Command until his promotion as Commissioner of Police.
