“Earthrise” photographer killed in plane crash

SEATTLE (Associated Press) — William Anders, the former Apollo 8 astronaut who took the famous 1968 “Earthrise” photograph showing the planet as a shadowy blue planet from space, was killed when the plane he was flying solo crashed into the waters off the San Juan Islands in Washington state. He was 90.

His son confirmed the death to the Associated Press on Friday.

The San Juan County Sheriff said just before noon Friday a report was received that an older model plane had crashed into the water and sunk near the northern end of Jones Island.
