Businesses reopen after Midtown Atlanta water crisis, some surprised to return to work so soon – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — After being closed for nearly a week due to water main breaks in Atlanta, businesses near the break at West Peachtree Street and 11th Street said they were back to work .

Some area business leaders said Channel 2’s Courtney Francisco they didn’t expect to be open Thursday.

Talk with Channel 2 Action News, Sam Weyman of the Steamhouse said he was surprised by the change and lucky there were customers.

The Steamhouse closed its doors nearly a week ago as water began gushing out of the ground at West Peachtree Street and 11th.

“We didn’t think we would be open today,” Weyman said Thursday. “We took a chance and opened and I can’t believe we have a good crowd here, and I’m very happy.”

In every company Channel 2 Action News Interviewed Thursday, workers described losing money because people couldn’t get in while businesses were closed.

Even workers at open companies reported losing out during the crisis.

“It affects people and everyone talks about it. Everyone who lives and works in this area is really upset about it,” said Rita Kouris, who works in Drybar.

As crews put the finishing touches on the concrete and water no longer flooded the streets, customers returned to Midtown, bringing back a sense of normalcy.

“I feel good that we had people back, we got people back,” Weyman said.

With crowds returning to businesses, workers and customers can see that work is still underway, but the water pipe that caused so many problems is now carefully covered in concrete. Only one barrier remains while the concrete dries.

Once the concrete has dried and the barricade has fallen, the lanes will reopen and traffic will remain normal.
