Man raped woman in ‘cruel’ attack during his 24th birthday party

A man who targeted a single, defenceless woman in downtown Cardiff and then brutally raped her under a railway bridge has been sentenced to prison.

Liam Stimpson was out celebrating his 24th birthday when he encountered his victim in the early hours of December 27, 2023.

Under the pretext of offering her food, he led her to a secluded location and attacked her under a bridge between Callaghan Square and St. Mary Street, police said.

He continued his attack while she tried to escape. Her cries for help eventually attracted a bar cleaner and a delivery driver, who successfully intervened. The woman suffered severe facial injuries as a result of the attack.

Within half an hour, Stimpson, from Llanrumney, was arrested by police in Caroline Street and has been in custody ever since.

Although he denied four offences, including rape and grievous bodily harm, he was found guilty by a jury at Cardiff Crown Court and will now serve a 15-year prison sentence.

Detective Inspector Katherine Barry of South Wales Police said: “Stranger attacks like this are extremely unusual in Cardiff, but in Liam Stimpson we were dealing with a dangerous individual.”

“The level of violence he used and the humiliation he inflicted on the victim were horrific. He is an absolute danger to women.”

“We would like to thank the witnesses who responded to the press appeal and those who courageously gave their statements.

“We would also like to express our thanks to the victim support worker who provided invaluable support to the victim and the investigation.”
