Suspect arrested by police for posing as IDF soldier

Police have arrested a 19-year-old resident of Abu Ghosh on suspicion of posing as an IDF soldier and conducting an interview on social media as such, police said on Wednesday.

In the interview, the suspect denigrated Israel and the Israeli military and claimed that systematic killings of women, children and babies were taking place daily in the Gaza Strip, police added.

The interview attracted a lot of attention and was widely viewed.

After a thorough investigation, the police arrested the suspect on Tuesday evening and handed him over to a local police station.

Police said they would apply to the court on Wednesday to extend his detention.

Previous cases of identity fraud

Since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas, there have been numerous cases in which people have posed as soldiers.

In January, an Israeli was charged with posing as an Israeli Defense Forces captain on October 7, gaining access to and passing on top-secret information.

In December, another defendant was accused of posing as an Israeli soldier to join the war. He also stole ammunition and reportedly posed for a photo with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In another incident in December, five East Jerusalem residents were charged with posing as Israeli army soldiers and storming a Palestinian police station.
