Atlanta BeltLine Inc., in conjunction with the City of Atlanta and the Atlanta Department of Transportation, is expected to begin construction at the intersection of 10th Monroe Street and Drive.

The improvement project is part of the ongoing construction of the Northeast trail – segment 1, which will improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. The Northeast Trail – Segment 1 should be completed by the end of fall 2024.

The intersection will be fully closed from the evening of June 9 until the evening of June 14, with closures expected for 24 hours. Detour routes will guide trail users and drivers through Kanuga to Virginia and Charles Allen to 8th Street throughout intersection construction.

In the event of bad weather, the closure will be postponed from June 16 to 20.

After the intersection is fully closed, single lane closures will be implemented to finalize sidewalk construction, which is expected to be completed by September. Single lane closures are expected to occur Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Key improvements include:

  • New 10th Street Bike Path: Provide direct access to the Atlanta BeltLine, improving connectivity and safety for trail users.
  • Raised Pedestrian Crossing: Improve the safety of trail users and pedestrians.
  • Improvements to level crossings and pedestrian signals: At key intersections to ensure safer travel for all trail users.
  • New traffic lights: Installed at Kanuga St NE and Monroe Dr NE to manage traffic and improve safety.

“Construction at 10th and Monroe will provide vital improvements for both pedestrians and cyclists, significantly improving safety and accessibility in the area,” said Atlanta BeltLine Construction Director Kynthia Gaines , Inc., in a press release. “These improvements will allow all visitors to the Atlanta BeltLine to navigate the area more safely and efficiently.”

The Northeast Trail – Segment 1, spanning 0.9 miles, will intersect the Eastside Trail at 10th and Monroe and run alongside and through a portion of Piedmont Park from Monroe Drive to Westminster Drive, where it ends will connect to the Northeast Trail – Segment 2. This trail will connect the neighborhoods of Midtown, Virginia Highland and Morningside. The trail is expected to be completed in late fall 2024.

When completed, Piedmont Park will have five direct access points to the BeltLine, allowing more Atlantans to bike, run and explore neighborhoods, businesses, art and more.
