UN relief agency UNRWA urgently suspends aid for Rafah

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has suspended its work in Rafah, Philippe Lazzarini, head of the relief agency for Palestinian refugees, announced on X on Saturday evening (June 1). According to Lazzarini, all UNRWA support posts in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip are currently vacant. He further explained that UNRWA has had to suspend all health and other essential services.

In the last three weeks, around 450 trucks carrying aid have arrived in Gaza, although at least 600 are needed per day, said Lazzarini. The organization continues its work from Khan Younis in central Gaza.

Israel has continued its attacks on Rafah despite sharp international criticism of its actions. On Saturday, Israeli forces shelled the city with both tanks and from the air. According to Israel, Rafah is Hamas’ last stronghold.
