One person was killed in a house fire in the Mountain View district of Anchorage on Friday afternoon, the city’s fire department said.

The Anchorage Fire Department was called to a residential building fire in the 100 block of North Bliss Street just before 3:45 p.m. Friday. When they arrived on scene, they found a one-story building with “thick smoke coming from a window,” the fire department said in a statement.

The department said that emergency personnel found a dead person while fighting the fire. The victim has yet to be identified.

Brian Partch, deputy chief, said firefighters were already on the way when the call came in and were able to respond within minutes. The fire was quickly extinguished, Partch said, and the unit sustained extensive smoke damage. No one else was home at the time of the fire, Partch said.

The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation, according to authorities. Partch said investigators were still on site Friday evening.
